Benefits & funding

• Tuition fees covered for up to 14 research periods, subject to satisfactory academic performance.
• Living allowance paid by the China Scholarship Council.
• Minimum-cost return international airfare direct from China to Sydney.
• Australian student visa application cost.
• Overseas student health cover for the period of study.
• Supplementary faculty scholarship of at least AUD 10,000 per year for up to 3.5 years.
• The Student Services and Amenities Fee is not covered by the scholarship.
• Recipients in the Faculty of Science are automatically considered for a separate CSC supplementary scholarship that pays the difference between the China Scholarship Council stipend and the University research stipend rate, for up to 3 years with a possible 6-month extension and no application form.

Eligibility

• The applicant is a citizen of the People’s Republic of China.
• The applicant may be willing to apply for admission, have applied for admission, hold a conditional or unconditional offer of admission, or be enrolled in a PhD but not yet have commenced at the University of Sydney.
• The applicant is not working or studying in Australia at the time of application.
• The applicant is not aged over 35 at the time of application.
• The applicant receives a stipend scholarship from the China Scholarship Council and meets its selection criteria.
• Admission to a Sydney PhD requires prior research experience, such as a research project equivalent to an Australian honours degree or a master’s by research, and proof of English proficiency where English is not the applicant’s first language.
• Selection rests on academic merit and on the area of study or research proposal, following nomination by the supervisor.

Application process

   Develop a research proposal of up to 2000 words and approach a University of Sydney supervisor whose work matches it; the Law School and the Business School allocate supervisors after acceptance instead.

   Obtain the supervisor’s written agreement to supervise the project.

   Submit the postgraduate research admission application online with the research proposal, two referee reports on the University forms, official transcripts and English translations, a CV and proof of identity, and pay the application processing fee unless it is waived for sponsored students.

   Secure an unconditional offer of admission to the PhD.

   Apply separately to the China Scholarship Council for a stipend scholarship and meet its selection criteria.

   The supervisor nominates the candidate for the University scholarship, which is awarded on academic merit and on the area of study or research proposal.
