Official Page

Teachers’ Academy is the entry-level professional development course of Programa Inglés Abre Puertas (PIAP), run by the General Education Division of Chile’s Ministry of Education. It is built for English teachers working in classrooms between 5° básico and 4° medio, the Chilean equivalent of grades 5 to 12.

The course is taught entirely in English and covers planning, assessment, differentiation and the development of speaking skills, framed by Chilean decrees N° 83 on curricular adaptations and N° 67 on assessment and promotion. Each lesson opens with a guiding question, and participants build one assignment progressively while using discussion forums and a reflective journal. It is delivered by a team of English and classroom teachers trained by PIAP.

Since 2023 the course has been hosted on the online platform of CPEIP, the Ministry’s teacher development centre, and carries CPEIP certification. It is the first stage of PIAP’s continuing professional development path and opens the door to the later courses in that path.

Benefits & funding

  • 45 pedagogical hours spread over roughly 18 weeks, delivered fully online.
  • CPEIP certification, in place since 2023.
  • Synchronous sessions for each module moderated by course tutors, plus discussion forums and independent practice tasks.
  • Practical tools for planning, assessment, differentiation and oral skills, tied to decrees N° 83 and N° 67.
  • Run by the Ministry of Education with CPEIP and the British Council; the call publishes no participation fee.

Eligibility

  • Serving English teachers with classroom hours between 5° básico and 4° medio (grades 5 to 12).
  • The school must be an establishment that receives state funding.
  • Teaching hours must be registered in SIGE, the national school information system.
  • An institutional support letter signed by the school principal or the head of the teaching unit (UTP), emailed to cursos.piap@mineduc.cl.
  • No nationality requirement is stated; the SIGE and state-funded school conditions mean applicants are teaching in Chile.
  • The course runs entirely in English; the 2025 call listed a B2 English level and membership of a Red de Docentes de Inglés (RDI) as desirable rather than required.
