The Bloomberg American Health Initiative at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health pays for the Master of Public Health for staff of organizations working on addiction and overdose, environmental challenges, food systems for health, adolescent health or violence in the United States.

Fellows study full-time in Baltimore (11 months) or part-time online and in person (two to three years), then work at least one more year for their organization.

Benefits & funding

  • Tuition and fees for up to 80 MPH credits; prerequisite courses are not covered.
  • A stipend toward travel, books and in-person courses in Baltimore.
  • Part-time fellows keep their salary; full-time fellows take leave from work.
  • If the degree or the year of service is not completed, the grant becomes a loan: repayable over up to 15 years, at an interest rate consistent with the Federal Direct Unsubsidized loan program.

Eligibility

  • Currently based in the United States and employed full-time by a collaborating organization whose focus-area work, and your work there, is US-based; US citizenship is not required.
  • Employed there for more than one year when applying (the FAQ says “should”).
  • The organization pledges to employ you for at least one year after graduation.
  • Admitted to the Bloomberg School’s full- or part-time MPH and starting in June.
  • Not eligible: students already matriculated in the MPH or DrPH, dual or joint degree applicants, and anyone applying to both MPH and DrPH in one cycle.
