The Bloomberg American Health Initiative at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health funds the Doctor of Public Health for staff of organizations working on addiction and overdose, environmental challenges, food systems for health, adolescent health or violence in the United States.
The DrPH is mostly part-time, taught through summer and winter institutes and online classes, so fellows keep working for their organization during the degree and for at least one year after.
Benefits & funding
- All tuition and fees for up to 70 credits.
- Your collaborating organization keeps employing and paying you throughout.
- At least 5 in-person credits in Baltimore; attending the annual summit is expected.
- Miss the degree or the year of service: repay in full within 180 days, or as a JHU loan over up to 15 years at 1% (FAQ); the application form says the rate follows the Federal Direct Unsubsidized loan program.
Eligibility
- Currently based in the United States and employed full-time by a collaborating organization whose focus-area work, and your work there, is US-based; US citizenship is not required.
- Employed there for more than one year when applying (the FAQ says “should”).
- Admitted to the DrPH outright; waitlisted applicants are not reviewed. The DrPH is designed for holders of an MPH or equivalent.
- Not eligible: current DrPH students, dual or joint degree applicants, anyone applying to both MPH and DrPH in one cycle, and past applicants who were not selected, enrolled, then withdrew.
Application process
- 1Apply to the DrPH through SOPHAS, with transcripts, test scores and recommendation letters, by 1 December 2026.
- 2Submit the Fellowship Applicant Form on Submittable; your organization submits the Collaborating Organization Form, both by 11:59 PM EST that day.
- 3Late or emailed applications are refused, and submitted applications cannot be edited.
