The Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellowship supports early-career researchers in any academic discipline to undertake postdoctoral work at one of eight eligible Israeli institutions. It is operated by the Azrieli Fellows Program of the Azrieli Foundation and awards up to 24 fellowships each year.

Fellows work with an academic sponsor in Israel and join professional development, interdisciplinary exchange, mentoring, and community activities. The standard award lasts two years, with a third year possible through competitive renewal.

Benefits & funding

  • ILS 168,000 per academic year, paid as a monthly stipend of ILS 14,000.
  • ILS 20,000 per year for approved research expenses and research-related travel.
  • Fellows accompanied to Israel by a companion may receive up to ILS 20,000 per year at the program team’s discretion.
  • Up to 24 awards annually: up to 18 in STEM, three in humanities, and three in social sciences.
  • Professional development, leadership training, interdisciplinary exchange, community engagement, mentoring, and alumni-network access.

Eligibility

  • Applicants with a PhD must have a diploma dated no earlier than November 1, 2023; allowances may apply for parental leave, medical leave, or other career interruptions.
  • Current PhD candidates may apply if they successfully defend their dissertation by June 1, 2027 and provide official documentation of the defence date.
  • Applicants must not have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree from an Israeli institution; former visiting or exchange students in Israel remain eligible.
  • Applicants must not have begun a postdoctoral position in Israel before September 1, 2026.
  • Each applicant must secure an academic sponsor at Bar-Ilan University, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Reichman University, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Tel Aviv University, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of Haifa, or Weizmann Institute of Science.
  • The sponsor may support only one applicant in this cycle and must not have officially supervised the applicant during the PhD, except that prior visiting PhD researchers may be sponsored.
  • Fellows must be based in Israel for at least 75 percent of the fellowship period.

Application process

    Secure an eligible academic sponsor in Israel and agree on the proposed research and start date.

    Complete the online application with personal details, academic credentials, publications, conference activity, and prior appointments.

    Upload the required CV, writing sample, personal essays, PhD documentation, and a postdoctoral research proposal of up to 1,500 words.

    Invite the academic sponsor and two scientific referees to submit their recommendations by November 10, 2026.
