The Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) is run by UvA Economics and Business at the University of Amsterdam for highly talented non-EU students starting one of its master’s programmes, such as Accountancy and Control.
Recipients study in Amsterdam. Awards are merit-based and limited: the faculty sets the AMS budget each year, so the number of awards is not fixed.
Benefits & funding
- The tuition fee plus a €5,000 allowance, for the programme’s length (1 year, no extension).
- A reimbursement, not a fee waiver: you pay the tuition fee yourself first.
- Paid out in 12 equal instalments.
Eligibility
- Non-EU nationality only (every country outside the EU); a second, EU passport bars you.
- Results in the top percentile: a GPA of at least (magna) cum laude (Dutch system), first-class honours (UK) or 3.7 (US).
- Not entitled to Dutch student finance (studiefinanciering), and no other full-coverage scholarship for the same study period.
- A complete application to a UvA Economics and Business master’s by 15 January.
- Able to meet Dutch (IND) visa rules.
- English test (e.g. TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS 7.0) and GMAT/GRE where the programme requires them.
Application process
- 1Apply for the master’s through Studielink and the UvA SIS portal before 15 January.
- 2In the scholarship section, upload a recommendation letter from a dean, teacher or academic supervisor confirming you are in the top 10% of your class, and a 300-word motivation letter.

- 4Files incomplete at the deadline are not considered.
