38 North Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program — Fellowship

The 38 North Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program is an annual mentoring and research program run by 38 North at the Henry L. Stimson Center. It pairs emerging North Korea policy analysts with senior scholars or practitioners for focused guidance on a research area or methodology.

Fellows develop an article for 38 North, present their work online and later join a two-day workshop in Washington, DC. The 2026–2027 application cycle is closed.

Benefits & funding

Eligibility

Applicants may be based anywhere in the world; no nationality or residency restriction is stated.
Applicants must be graduate students, recent graduates, or emerging or mid-career professionals.

Applicants must demonstrate experience or interest in a relevant career.

Application process

Prepare a statement of interest covering a proposed research topic in no more than 200 words, expected gains in no more than 150 words, and relevant experience in no more than 150 words.

Prepare a resumé or CV and, if applicable, a list of recent publications.

List any Korea- or Northeast Asia-related fellowships joined in the previous three years, currently underway, or planned to begin within the next six months.
