Writer in the Park brings an international author to Ljubljana for one month of uninterrupted writing. It is run by the Ljubljana UNESCO City of Literature office together with MGLC, the International Centre of Graphic Arts, which provides the residency flat.
The resident lives and works at the Švicarija creative centre on the edge of Tivoli park, in the same building as visual artists holding studios there. Two residency months are offered each year; the 2026 round filled 1–30 April and 1–30 November.
Beyond desk time, the organisers introduce the resident to Ljubljana’s literary scene, arrange meetings with translators, editors and local writers, and can set up a public presentation. The point of the programme is to move writers between the cities of the UNESCO literature network.
Benefits & funding
- €1,250 gross in total, covering the grant and travel to and from Ljubljana.
- A furnished 59.83 m² flat at Švicarija: a work studio with desk and chair, plus a living area with kitchen, bathroom and a bed with linens.
- Local public transport during the stay and an internet connection.
- Introductions to publishers, translators and local writers, plus an optional public presentation of the resident’s work.
Eligibility
- Published writers with a documented link to a UNESCO City of Literature other than Ljubljana — the city they live in, or an organisation there they work with.
- At least one published book of fiction, poetry or drama in the writer’s own language.
- Writers based in Ljubljana or Celje, Slovenia’s own Cities of Literature, cannot apply.
- No limits on age, gender, race or nationality; applicants in the 2026 round were aged 20 to 79.
- The resident must be present for the whole residency month; only travel days are flexible.
