The World Heritage Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland International Scholarship & Residency is run by Region Gävleborg, Sweden, and was established in 2018. It brings professional artists, cultural practitioners and researchers to Hälsingland for a four-week residency to develop an artistic or research idea that connects the Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland — a UNESCO World Heritage site — to one or more other World Heritage sites. The scholarship is international and open to applicants worldwide; recent cycles drew nearly 1,000 applications from more than 100 countries.

Benefits & funding

  • A scholarship grant equivalent to 50,000 SEK to carry out the proposed idea or project.
  • A four-week residency at one of two World Heritage farms — Kristofers in Järvsö or Erik-Anders in Söderala.
  • Travel to and from Hälsingland is covered; accommodation is provided as part of the residency.

Eligibility

  • Professional artists, cultural practitioners and researchers.
  • International — open to applicants from all over the world; no nationality restriction.
  • No stated degree, age, or language requirement.
  • The proposal must show a clear, relevant and feasible connection between the Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland and one or more other UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Application process

    Prepare a proposal describing the artistic or research idea and how it links the Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland to other World Heritage sites.

    Submit the application through Region Gävleborg during the annual open window (most recently 15 January – 28 February 2026).

    A jury assesses the proposals; the recipient is notified personally in November before the public announcement.
