The Winter Research Fellowship (US) is a paid fellowship run by the Institute for Law & AI (LawAI). Fellows spend roughly eight weeks or more, between late January and early May, conducting supervised research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, law, and U.S. policy. The program pairs fellows with mentors, supports career planning, and offers engagement with policymakers. It is remote-first and open to applicants worldwide.

Eligibility
- Open to applicants from all countries.
- Graduate law students (for example JD or LLM), PhD candidates, postdocs, practicing lawyers, and academics.
- Welcomes applicants with various skill sets, experience levels, and degrees of knowledge in AI, law, and policy. Candidates should have an interest in AI law and policy and be prepared to apply their research abilities and legal knowledge to questions in the field.
- No prior experience or expertise in AI-specific research is required, though demonstrated research ability and interest are expected.
- Full professional fluency in spoken and written English.
- A commitment to full-time work for a minimum of eight consecutive weeks.
Application process
- 1Submit the online application form (about 20 minutes).
- 2Complete a short asynchronous interview (about 30 minutes).
- 3Take part in a research interview with LawAI staff (40–50 minutes).
- 4Receive a decision by the end of November.
