The W. Eugene Smith Grant supports visual storytellers developing major humanistic photographic essays. The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund administers the program for photographers working on documentary or photojournalistic projects addressing significant human concerns.
The grant can help launch a new photographic project or complete photography for an ongoing one. International and non-professional applicants may apply, and collaborations are accepted.
Benefits & funding
- One 2026 recipient receives a US$30,000 grant; two finalists each receive US$10,000.
- The main grant is paid as US$24,000 on award and US$6,000 after delivery of 12 digital images and 12 prints within 18 months.
- Each finalist grant is paid as US$8,000 on award and US$2,000 after delivery of 12 digital images within 18 months.
- The application fee is US$50. A limited number of fee waivers are available through listed partner organizations for photographers unable to afford the fee.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- Applications are accepted internationally; no nationality or residency restriction is stated.
- Professional status is not required, and multiple creative collaborators may apply together.
- Current students should use the Student Grant, except applicants who will graduate by the time the grant is decided may apply to this grant.
- Each individual may submit only one proposal and may not apply to both this grant and the Student Grant.
- The proposed work must begin a photographic project or complete photography for an ongoing project; projects limited to editing, publishing, exhibiting, or archiving already-finished photography are not eligible.
