Us@250 Fellowship — Fellowship

New America runs the Us@250 Fellowship to support projects that broaden the American story and connect people across differences. The 2024–2025 public call focused on longform journalists producing local human-interest reporting through the initiative’s themes of pride, reckoning, and aspiration.

Fellows remain in their communities while developing a publishable article. Cohort exchanges, professional development, and New America’s networks accompany the work.

A $10,000 honorarium paid in installments.
Regular cohort sessions to share practices, workshop ideas and drafts, and build collaborations.
Professional development through New America’s expertise and networks, including in-person and virtual panels and seminars.
Connections to organizations and individuals working on democracy and the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Eligibility

Journalists and reporters at any career stage, whether employed by a newsroom or working freelance.
Applicants must pursue a genuinely local human-interest story about communities bridging differences to solve problems, confront local history, or build community.
Applicants must have previously published a feature or longform article of approximately 3,000–5,000 words; the fellowship deliverable is a publishable article.
The published call states no citizenship, residence, degree, age, or gender requirement.
