The UNA-USA Youth Observer to the United Nations is an annual one-year appointment run by the United Nations Association of the United States of America. One young American engages peers across the United States, gathers their views on international issues, and connects them with the work of the United Nations.
The Observer travels within the United States and participates as a UNA-USA delegate at UN conferences. The 2026–2027 application cycle has ended, although the official landing page still displays an outdated applications-open notice.
Benefits & funding
- A one-year appointment representing and engaging young Americans in dialogue connected to the United Nations.
- Opportunities to travel across the United States, attend UN briefings and conferences, organize events, and participate in coalitions supporting the U.S.–UN relationship.
- The official pages reviewed do not publish a stipend, salary, travel reimbursement, accommodation coverage, or other funding amount. The opportunity is therefore classified as free rather than funded.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be American and 18–25 years old.
- No degree level, U.S. residency location, minimum work experience, or gender requirement is stated on the official pages reviewed.
- UNA-USA describes strong candidates as engaged with civic and international issues and capable in writing, social media, public speaking, and conversations with varied stakeholders; these are selection preferences, not additional hard eligibility gates.
