The TWAS-CSIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is run jointly by TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) and India’s Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It hosts early-to-mid-career researchers from developing countries at one of CSIR’s network of institutes and laboratories in India for a research stay of six to twelve months. Fellows join an active research group to advance an agreed project in the natural sciences, engineering, or health. The scheme is aimed at scientists who are employed in their home country and will return there to continue their careers. Fields span the physical, biological, medical, agricultural, engineering, and mathematical sciences.

Benefits & funding

  • Monthly stipend from CSIR to cover living costs, food, and health insurance (paid in Indian rupees; not convertible to foreign currency).
  • Subsidised accommodation arranged through the host institute.
  • Access to CSIR’s research facilities and laboratories for the duration of the fellowship.
  • Note: the programme does not publish a fixed stipend figure, and international airfare is not stated as covered.

Eligibility

  • Be a national of a developing country other than India.
  • Hold a PhD in a field of science or technology.
  • Be no older than 45 years on 31 December of the application year.
  • Be regularly employed in a developing country and hold a research assignment there.
  • Not hold a visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or in a developed country.
  • Provide an acceptance letter from a CSIR host institution.
  • Demonstrate English proficiency if prior education was not in English.
  • Provide evidence of intent to return home on completion.

Application process

    Identify a suitable CSIR institute and research supervisor and secure a preliminary acceptance letter.

    Prepare the required documents, including the acceptance letter, research plan, and proof of eligibility.

    Submit the application to TWAS through the online portal.

    Send a copy of the application to CSIR by email as instructed in the call.
  5. 5
    Await evaluation; results are communicated after the review period closes.

Program timeline

  1. The most recent call opened 3 October 2024 and closed 28 January 2025 (extended from 14 January 2025).

  2. No call opens in 2026; the programme is expected to resume in a later cycle.
