The Toshiba International Foundation Fellowships support doctoral research in Japan and are administered by EAJS with TIFO funding. They fund a two- to three-month stay for an ongoing first Ph.D. project in Japanese Studies at a European institution.
The program has been offered annually since 1998, and TIFO continued supporting it in fiscal 2026. The 2026/27 application round is closed; research funded in that round must end by 31 March 2027.

Eligibility
- Be enrolled as a doctoral student both when applying and during the research stay.
- Pursue a first Ph.D. in Japanese Studies at a European institution; postdoctoral researchers are not eligible.
- Have spent no more than two years in Japan in total and not have graduated from a Japanese high school.
- No nationality or country-of-residence requirement is stated.

Application process
- 1Prepare a curriculum vitae.
- 2Write an outline of no more than 500 words describing the Ph.D. project for which research in Japan is proposed.
- 3Submit both documents through the EAJS online application portal when the next call opens.
- 4Ask a supervisor or advisor to send a separate signed support letter on university letterhead to the EAJS office by post or as a PDF by email.
- 5If selected, become an EAJS member before receiving the fellowship.
