The Fulcrum Fall Journalism Fellowship is a training program run by The Fulcrum, a nonpartisan online publication covering democracy and civic life. Fellows learn solutions journalism and “complicating the narrative” techniques under Executive Editor Hugo Balta, an accredited trainer with the Solutions Journalism Network. The program is delivered remotely and runs alongside a larger summer cohort as part of the fellowship’s two-cohort-per-year structure, supported by the Hortencia Zavala Foundation. Fellows produce original reported stories and receive editorial mentorship. The fall 2026 cohort runs September 14 through October 20.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate and graduate journalism students based in the United States.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • No nationality restriction stated beyond being a student in the U.S.

Application process

    Prepare a current résumé, work samples (published or academic), a cover letter on how the fellowship supports your growth, and one letter of recommendation.

    Email the materials to newsroom@fulcrum.us with the subject line “Fall Fulcrum Fellowship application.”

    Submit by the August 3 deadline; selected fellows join the September–October cohort.
