Tax Fairness Fellowship — Fellowship

The Tax Fairness Fellowship is a seven-month paid programme run by the School for Moral Ambition, an Amsterdam-based foundation founded by historian Rutger Bregman with four co-founders. It moves experienced professionals into organisations campaigning for fairer tax systems. The programme cites roughly 492 billion US dollars of tax revenue lost every year to tax abuse by corporations and wealthy individuals as the reason the work matters.

The first month is full-time training, including a week with the whole cohort in the Netherlands. It covers international tax law, policy strategy, coalition building, stakeholder engagement and narrative change.

The remaining six months are a placement inside one host organisation, on live policy work and active campaigns. Host organisations include the Center for Economic and Social Rights, Oxfam Novib, the South Centre, ICRICT, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, Canadians for Tax Fairness and Patriotic Millionaires. Placements sit in Paris, The Hague, Geneva, Nairobi and locations across the United States and Canada.

Benefits & funding

Monthly stipend of €4,000 in Belgium, adjusted for cost of living at other placement locations.
Seven months full-time: one month of training plus a six-month placement.
One week of in-person training in the Netherlands with the full cohort.

Eligibility

At least five years of professional experience in a relevant field. Freelance work counts towards the five years, as does a PhD, and non-linear careers are welcome.
The legal right to work in Canada, the EU, Kenya or the United States, through citizenship, permanent residence or an existing work permit.
Applicants who do not already live in the placement country must be able to relocate there before the end of August.
English at C1 level or above.
No degree requirement. Selection is on skills rather than credentials, and a background in tax is optional.
No maximum age is set; the School looks for people with a substantial career still ahead of them.
Profiles sought include tax lawyers, economists, communicators, policy strategists, researchers and coalition builders.
