The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) is funded by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education to bring foreign learners, beginners included, to study Mandarin at an accredited language centre attached to a Taiwanese university or college.
This call, run by the Taipei Cultural and Economic Delegation in Bern, is for Swiss and Liechtenstein citizens. Recipients choose a two-month summer course or 3, 6, 9 or 12 months of study.
Benefits & funding
- NTD 28,000 a month from the month study begins; tuition and any costs above the stipend are the recipient’s own.
- A summer course (June–July or July–August), or 3, 6, 9 or 12 months within 1 September–31 August; no deferral.
- At least 15 class hours a week; missing 12 or more hours in a month, or an average under 80 on an award of six months or more, suspends payments.
- Holding another scholarship at the same time means cancellation and repayment.
Eligibility
- Swiss or Liechtenstein citizens aged 18 or over, with at least a secondary-school diploma and an excellent academic record.
- Not open to holders of a Republic of China (Taiwan) passport or overseas compatriot students.
- Barred: past recipients of HES, the TUSA Global Ambassador Scholarship or a Taiwan Scholarship; anyone now studying Chinese in Taiwan or who has studied for a degree there.
- Barred: exchange students in Taiwan during the award period, and anyone now receiving Taiwan government or Taiwan institutional funding.
