Suborno Jayanti Scholarship Scheme — Bachelor's Scholarship

The Suborno Jayanti Scholarship Scheme is the single route through which India’s government funds Bangladeshi students to study in India. ICCR lists it as scheme A1218 and states that scholarships for Bangladesh nationals are offered under this one scheme, subsuming the older country schemes.

It dates from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh on 26–27 March 2021, when 1,000 Suborno Jayanti Scholarships were announced: 500 student places administered by ICCR and 500 training seats for officials administered by ITEC.

Scholars take undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD degrees at Indian universities and institutes. Applications are handled by the High Commission of India in Dhaka and the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet; the university, not ICCR, decides admission.

Benefits & funding

Tuition fees at the host university are paid by the scholarship.
A monthly living allowance, plus a house rent allowance where the university does not house the scholar; ICCR sets the exact rates in the financial-terms document it publishes each year on the Suborno Jayanti portal.
An annual contingency grant towards books and stationery, and a one-time thesis or dissertation allowance for research students.
Return economy-class airfare, plus third-AC train fare to the place of study.
Three months of stipend are released on arrival; later payments go into a State Bank of India account the scholar opens.
Medical treatment under Central Government Health Scheme rules. Separately, every scholar must carry personal medical insurance with a minimum sum assured of INR 500,000 a year.
Campus hostel accommodation, and staying in the hostel is compulsory.

Eligibility

Open to nationals of Bangladesh.
Applicants must be 18 by the time they apply to Indian universities, no older than 40 for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and no older than 50 for a PhD. Courses in Hindi, Sanskrit and Indian performing arts carry no upper age limit.
Undergraduate applicants must have passed the 12th standard; engineering and technology applicants must have taken physics, chemistry and mathematics in grades 11 and 12.
Indian missions in Bangladesh ask for at least 60 per cent marks, or GPA 3 out of 5, in the qualifying examination.
English proficiency is required, because Indian universities teach in English.
Medicine, paramedical courses (nursing, physiotherapy, anaesthesia and the like), fashion, law and integrated courses such as BALLB are not covered.
A passport valid for at least one year from the date of registration.
Applicants with minor disabilities may apply; a scholar who needs a caregiver must fund that person’s stay.

Register on the Suborno Jayanti portal at sjsdhaka.gov.in — Bangladeshi applicants must do this before using the ICCR portal.

Register on ICCR’s A2A portal and complete the online application; every detail must match the documents you upload.

Rank your university and course preferences — the Suborno Jayanti FAQ allows three choices, and the mission’s 2024–25 announcement allowed five.

Upload documents in English: mark sheets, birth certificate, school leaving certificate, nationality certificate, government ID, passport, and a physical-fitness certificate on ICCR’s prescribed format.

Submit before the closing date. Nothing can be changed once the application is finally submitted.

The Indian mission processes the applications; universities decide admission on their own criteria, and some interview PhD candidates.

On selection, buy the required medical insurance, complete visa formalities and join the course. Admission is treated as cancelled if the scholar cannot join within a month.
