Story Grants to Report on Asia’s Endangered Apes

FellowshipRemote

Earth Journalism Network (Internews)

Application Deadline

Closed · July 19, 2026

Expected to reopen

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) funds in-depth reporting on the threats facing orangutans, gibbons and other apes in Asia, in the wild and in captivity, and on the conservation work to protect them.

The grants sit within EJN’s project on media for ape conservation in Africa and Asia, supported by the Arcus Foundation. Themes include habitat loss, illegal trade, laws and treaties, protected areas and One Health; cross-border stories are of particular interest.

Benefits & funding

  • Up to 10 grants, each with a budget of up to US$1,500
  • Can pay for travel, multimedia elements and a reporter stipend (at most 30% of the budget)
  • One-to-one editorial mentorship and training on repackaging stories for social media
  • Duties: credit EJN in a set tagline; EJN, its partners and Arcus may republish the work
  • Stories in a local language must also come with an English translation

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be from one of nine ape-range countries: Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand or Vietnam
  • Journalists in any medium, or other media practitioners with experience covering conservation; freelancers and staff of any outlet
  • Groups may apply under one lead applicant
  • Applications in English only
  • Preference for those who completed EJN’s June 2026 ape-reporting workshop; women, rural, Indigenous and early-career journalists especially encouraged
