The Solitude Fellowship is the general open call of Akademie Schloss Solitude, a residency programme in Stuttgart funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Every two years it selects 50–60 artists, researchers and cultural professionals.
Fellows live and work on site for six or nine months on open-ended projects in one of six spheres: Visual, Aural & Physical, Spatial, Textual, Digital and Scientific. The 2026–2028 round has closed; the next call is expected in fall 2027.
Benefits & funding
- €1,300 a month for living costs, calculated for one person.
- Furnished live/work studio with utilities; studios are allocated, not chosen.
- One-time travel reimbursement for arrival and departure; health insurance covered for non-EU residents.
- Project funding, depending on budget.
- Duty: full-time residency with main residence in Stuttgart for the whole stay; part-time work should be paused or significantly reduced.
Eligibility
- Open to any nationality and country of residence.
- Two to ten years of independent practice after education, regardless of age — a guideline, not a strict cut-off; longer careers are considered if the timing is justified.
- Scientific sphere: master’s degree or higher; other spheres accept any training, including self-taught.
- Barred: people still in education (doctoral candidates excepted), full university professors, and anyone who has already held a residency in any Akademie programme.
- Collectives of up to two people who have worked together for at least two years.
- German and/or English required.

Application process

- 2In heavily subscribed spheres, an anonymous lottery decides who advances.
- 3Stage 2: admitted applicants submit a full application with work samples; last round closed 19 December 2025.
- 4An international jury selects; no reasons are given.
- 5Some applicants pay an application fee; the platform sets out who pays and a country list, but the public pages state no amount.
