The SOKENDAI KEK Summer Student Program is a research internship run by KEK (High Energy Accelerator Research Organization) together with SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies). Selected students spend up to eight weeks (four weeks for theory groups) between mid-June and mid-August working alongside KEK researchers on a hands-on project at the Tsukuba campus or the Tokai (J-PARC) campus in Japan. Research fields span elementary particle physics, nuclear physics, materials and life science, accelerator science, detector and computing systems, and lattice-QCD theory. Around 20 students take part each year, and joint sessions in mid-to-late July bring the cohort together.

Benefits & funding

  • Up to 8 weeks of supervised research with KEK/J-PARC groups (4 weeks for theory groups).
  • For non-Japanese university students: round-trip international airfare (arranged by the organizers and paid directly to agencies), dormitory accommodation fees, and domestic airport-to-campus travel (Narita/Haneda).
  • A fixed per diem of JPY 1,500 per day for all participants.
  • Domestic travel costs covered; travel reimbursed in cash (JPY) within the first two weeks.
  • Not covered: visa fees and medical/travel/liability insurance — participants must arrange their own insurance covering the full program period.

Eligibility

  • Open to international and Japanese students; no nationality restriction.
  • Enrolled from the latter half of an undergraduate degree through Master’s level as of March 1, 2026 (PhD students are not eligible).
  • Recommended background in dynamics, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics.
  • At least one academic reference is required.
