The Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship is a nine-month fellowship run by Durham University’s Institute of Advanced Studies in partnership with Reuters. It gives one exceptional early-career journalist the chance to pursue an in-depth investigative project from inside a Reuters newsroom in London, New York, Sydney or Toronto, mentored by senior Reuters editors and supported by Durham’s academics and research resources. The Fellow delivers a public seminar at the Institute of Advanced Studies, sharing what they learned. The fellowship honours Sir Harry Evans, the celebrated editor who served as Reuters’ Editor-at-Large, and champions a new generation of investigative reporters.

Benefits & funding

  • Monthly salary of c.£4,444 (equivalent to a pro-rata salary of c.£53,333 per year)
  • £1,250 per month living stipend, in addition to the salary
  • One-off payment of £1,800 for travel and related expenses
  • A nine-month placement inside a Reuters newsroom (London, New York, Sydney or Toronto)
  • Mentorship from senior Reuters editors and access to Durham University’s academics and research resources
  • A platform to deliver a public seminar at Durham’s Institute of Advanced Studies

Eligibility

  • Open globally; applications are welcomed from all eligible candidates regardless of their current location
  • Generally two to five years’ professional journalism experience
  • Applicants who are not currently journalists but have worked in a related investigative capacity (for example as authors or researchers on authoritative investigative work, or making investigative documentaries, photo or video projects) may be considered case by case
  • The city of placement is decided by the Fellowship Committee, and the successful candidate must meet the applicable immigration requirements
  • Applications from groups under-represented in journalism are encouraged
  • AI-generated proposals are disqualified

Application process

    Review the selection criteria and prepare an investigative project proposal, written without generative AI.

    Submit an application through the official Durham University application link during the open window.
  3. 3
    The Fellowship Committee assesses applications and determines the city of placement for the selected Fellow.
