Shanghai University of Sport Chinese Government Scholarship — “High-Level Postgraduate” Program (Type B)

The Chinese Government Scholarship “High-Level Postgraduate” Program (Type B) lets Chinese universities select and nominate international students themselves. Shanghai University of Sport uses it to fund master’s and doctoral candidates on its Shanghai campus. Chinese-taught master’s places run three years, the English-taught master’s programmes two years, and doctoral places four.

Teaching is in Chinese or English depending on the discipline. The subjects open under the scheme are sport-focused: ethnic traditional sports, sports education and training, sport management, sports event operations, sports humanities and sociology, leisure sports, journalism and communication, sports rehabilitation, exercise and sport science, medical technology, psychology, and anti-doping science for doctoral applicants only.

The university screens the file, runs an online subject interview and nominates candidates; the China Scholarship Council makes the final award. The 2026 intake closed on 28 February 2026 and the admitted list was published that July, so the next cycle is expected to open around January 2027.

Benefits & funding

Tuition is waived for the standard length of the degree.
On-campus accommodation is free; students housed off campus receive CNY 700 a month at master’s level and CNY 1,000 a month at doctoral level.
Comprehensive medical insurance is covered, valued at CNY 800 per student per year.
A living stipend is paid monthly: CNY 3,000 for master’s students and CNY 3,500 for doctoral students.
Funding lasts the standard programme length stated on the admission notice — three years for a Chinese-taught master’s, two years for an English-taught master’s, four for doctoral.
Recipients pass an annual review; a failed review can suspend or cancel the award, and the scholarship cannot be held alongside another government or university scholarship.

Eligibility

Non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign ordinary passport, in good physical and mental health.
Master’s applicants must already hold a bachelor’s degree and be no older than 35; doctoral applicants must hold a master’s degree and be no older than 40.
A GPA of at least 3.0, or an average score of at least 75, in the most recent stage of study.
Chinese-taught programmes require HSK Level 5 or above on a certificate issued within the last two years; English-taught programmes require IELTS 6.5 or above, TOEFL 80 or above, or equivalent evidence.
Applicants need the subject background and research ability for the discipline they apply to, plus a clean criminal record.
No nationality, residency or gender restriction applies beyond the rule that recipients cannot be Chinese citizens.

Application process

Register on the university international student platform at admission.sus.edu.cn and apply inside the annual window, which has run from 1 January to 28 February (23:59 Beijing time).

Upload the full document set: passport copy, notarised degree certificate and transcript, HSK or English language certificate, study plan or research proposal, CV, two letters from professors or associate professors, a supervisor pre-acceptance letter, any prior research output, a medical examination form issued within six months, a self-introduction video of up to three minutes, a criminal-record certificate or pledge, and proof of funds or a financial guarantee of at least CNY 100,000.

Pay the non-refundable application fee of CNY 500 or USD 80 and upload the receipt; applications without it are not processed.

The university completes document screening, the online subject interview and its own scholarship assessment by 15 March, then emails a pre-admission notice to nominated candidates only.

Nominated candidates register in the China Scholarship Council system at studyinchina.csc.edu.cn by 20 March, selecting Type B and agency number 10277; missing this step cancels the nomination.

The China Scholarship Council convenes expert panels for the final selection and announces the awards.
