Shanghai Government Scholarship

Benefits & funding

• Class A covers tuition, on-campus accommodation, a living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance for the standard length of the program.
• Class A living allowance: RMB 2,500 per month for bachelor’s students, RMB 3,000 for master’s students, RMB 3,500 for doctoral students.
• Class B covers tuition and comprehensive medical insurance only — no living allowance, no accommodation.
• Undergraduate tuition at the university is RMB 22,000–24,000 per academic year, which is what a Class B award removes each year.
• Support runs for the standard program length: 4 years for a bachelor’s degree, 3 years for a master’s (2 years for the English-taught master’s), 4 years for a doctorate.

Eligibility

• Non-Chinese citizens holding a valid ordinary foreign passport, in good health, with the subject background their chosen program requires; master’s and doctoral applicants must also show research ability.
• Bachelor’s applicants need a high-school qualification and must be no older than 25; preparatory-year applicants no older than 23; master’s applicants need a bachelor’s degree and must be no older than 35; doctoral applicants need a master’s degree and must be no older than 40.
• Chinese at HSK level 5 or above — a higher bar than the HSK 4 asked of self-funded entrants.
• GPA of at least 3.0, or a subject average of at least 75, in the previous stage of study; no criminal record.
• Applicants who took foreign nationality after emigrating from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan, and those born abroad to Chinese parents, must have held the foreign passport for at least 4 years and have lived outside China for more than 2 of the last 4 years, counted to the deadline (9 months in a year counts as a full year, judged by entry and exit stamps).
• Holders of a Chinese Government Scholarship cannot take this award at the same time.
• Any nationality other than Chinese may apply, and no particular country of residence is required.

Application process

   Register on the Shanghai University of Sport International Student Service System, complete the application form and pay the registration fee of USD 80 or RMB 500.

   Submit the scholarship application a second time on the Study in Shanghai portal at study.edu.sh.gov.cn/apply/, under institution code 10277.

   Upload the documents: passport, notarised degree certificates and transcripts, HSK certificate, two professors’ recommendation letters for master’s and doctoral applicants, medical examination form, a three-minute MP4 video self-introduction, police clearance and proof of financial means.

   The Office of International Students Services screens the file, and each school runs its own online subject interview.

   The university’s international admissions group settles the candidate list, and results are published on the admissions portal.
