The SEO Law Fellowship is the main program of SEO Law, the law arm that the career-access organization SEO launched in 1984. It takes people who are about to start law school and places them in a corporate law firm the summer before their first year.

The fellowship runs from May of the fellowship year to August of the next. It opens with a two-week Law Institute, one week online and one week in person in New York City. Fellows then spend 10 paid weeks as summer associates at a partner firm, and get academic and professional support through their first year of law school.

The stated aim is to help incoming students succeed both in law school and in corporate law firms.

Benefits & funding

  • A paid 10-week summer associate internship at a partner law firm, working full time on tasks such as drafting briefs, legal research, contract revisions and support on transactional deals. SEO does not publish the pay rate.
  • Summer offices in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Menlo Park/Palo Alto, Miami, New York City, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and Wilmington.
  • The Law Institute: two weeks of training in legal analysis, legal research and writing, and law school study and exam strategy, with lectures such as Torts and Criminal Law and individual written feedback from legal writing professionals.
  • Workshops on law firm structure, professionalism, litigation and transactional practice, pro bono work and networking, plus networking events with partner firms.
  • 1L academic support from tutors and professors who review notes, case briefs, outlines and practice exams.
  • An alumni network of 2,500+, including law firm partners, general counsels, U.S. attorneys and federal judges. SEO Law reports 275 alumni in general counsel, chief legal officer or senior corporate counsel roles, and 100+ alumni who became partners at more than 40 major firms.
  • SEO does not say whether travel or housing for the in-person week or the summer is covered.

Eligibility

  • Open to any nationality, but you must hold US work authorization for the whole fellowship, obtained on your own before May. The fellowship and its partner firms do not provide it.
  • A graduate of a four-year college or university by May of the fellowship year, or a working professional.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3.
  • The LSAT, GRE or GMAT taken at least once before applying, with a minimum LSAT score of 154 or the GRE/GMAT equivalent.
  • At least one law school application submitted by the time you apply. Admission is not required to apply.
  • Applying to an ABA-accredited law school, with plans to start in the fall straight after the fellowship summer. Only those starting that fall qualify for the firm internships.
  • Proof of law school enrollment or seat deposit by the April deadline.

Application process

    Join the SEO Law mailing list to hear when the next application opens (the 2026 cycle opened on 4 December 2025).

    Complete the online SEO Law application with your contact details and your law school applications and admissions status.

    Upload a resume in SEO’s template, your LSAC Academic Summary and unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

    Name one referee, who completes SEO’s standard evaluation form.
  5. 5
    If selected, schedule an interview. Invitations go out on a rolling basis from January to April.

    Submit law school enrollment or seat deposit confirmation by the mid-April deadline, and report admissions changes through the law school updates form.

    Receive a decision in April or early May. You can list preferred cities and practice groups, and SEO Law assigns the final office.
