The Pegasus Scholarship Trust funds short legal placements overseas for junior barristers. On the self-arranged route the applicant finds a host organisation abroad and puts that placement to the Trust for funding.
The Trust is a pan-Inn body, so members of any of the four Inns of Court may apply. The Inner Temple runs the scheme and publishes the application dates.
Proposals are judged as legal learning experiences. The Trust says a Pegasus Scholarship should not be regarded as a holiday, even though it offers travel within the country visited.
Benefits & funding
- A stipend for the placement; the award letter states the amount and who funds it.
- Travel to and from the placement, booked under the Trust’s travel booking policy.
- A letter confirming the award to support the visa application; obtaining the visa is the scholar’s own responsibility.
- The Trust does not publish a fixed award figure for self-arranged placements on its website.
Eligibility
- Practising at the Bar of England and Wales, either as a tenant in chambers or at the employed Bar.
- Within the first seven years of practice, pupillage not counted, measured at 31 December of the application year.
- A member of any of the four Inns of Court.
- Written permission from the employer or head of chambers or head clerk.
- An intention to remain in practice at the Bar for at least three years after the placement.
- A break for illness, a career change or parental leave can be raised as grounds for dispensation from the seven-year limit.

- 3Give two referees who have known you for at least six months and who are not family members.
- 4Attend the online interview; every eligible applicant is offered one.
- 5Receive the result by email within two weeks of the interviews.
