The Science Tokyo Summer Program is an in-person research and exchange program run by the Institute of Science Tokyo. The 2026 edition brought eligible students from overseas partner institutions to Tokyo for special lectures, laboratory research training, campus activities, and cultural experiences centered on medical-engineering collaboration.

It ran for four weeks from July 2 to July 29, 2026, with approximately three weeks devoted to laboratory placement and research training. The 2026 cycle has ended, and the university has not published a date for the next call.

Benefits & funding

  • The program included special lectures, campus visits, laboratory placement, approximately three weeks of research training, cultural activities, a company visit, a final presentation, and a completion certificate.
  • Participants paid a JPY 150,000 program fee.
  • Accommodation was not included; the official estimate was JPY 100,000–150,000 for four weeks.
  • The official estimate for food, daily necessities, and utilities was JPY 100,000–150,000 for four weeks. The July 2 welcome event and July 29 lunch and farewell event were included.
  • Participants paid their international travel and transportation in Japan; the official local-transport estimate was JPY 10,000–20,000.
  • Overseas travel insurance was mandatory, along with separate Science Tokyo insurance estimated at JPY 1,150–1,340. No STSP or JASSO scholarship was available.

Eligibility

  • Applicants had to be enrolled in a regular degree program at one of Science Tokyo’s overseas partner institutions.
  • At the time of participation, applicants had to be second-year undergraduate students or above, or master’s students.
  • Applicants needed English proficiency sufficient for international academic conferences related to science.
  • The guidelines also required interest in Science Tokyo student life and research training, plus good physical and mental health.
  • Applications had to be nominated and submitted through the applicant’s home university; direct applications were not accepted.

Application process

    The student contacted the exchange office or equivalent at the home university by early January.

    The home-university coordinator submitted the nomination sheet by January 16, 2026, at 17:00 JST.

    After nomination, the STSP office requested the application materials directly from the student.

    The student submitted the application form, passport copy, enrollment certificate, transcript, photograph, faculty recommendation, and any required visa, English-proficiency, or research-specific documents by January 30, 2026, at 17:00 JST.

    The applicant ranked up to three preferred laboratories. Science Tokyo completed the matching and selection process.
