The Rome Prize is awarded each year by the American Academy in Rome to about thirty artists and scholars, including practicing architects. Winners in architecture relocate to the Academy’s campus on the Janiculum hill in Rome to pursue an independent creative or research project of their choosing, embedded in a cross-disciplinary community of fellows and visiting artists and scholars. Both full-term and half-term fellowships are offered in the discipline. The award is designed to give architects the time, space, and setting to advance ambitious independent work.

Benefits & funding

  • Stipend of US $30,000 for full-term fellows; US $16,000 for half-term fellows.
  • A private bedroom with private bath and a dedicated private workspace at the Academy.
  • Lunch and dinner provided Monday through Friday at no cost through the Rome Sustainable Food Project.
  • Full term runs from early September through the following June (about ten months); half term is about five months, beginning in either September or February.

Eligibility

  • Open to United States citizens; foreign-national exceptions apply only to certain Environmental Arts & Humanities and postdoctoral humanities categories, not to architecture.
  • Applicants must hold an accredited degree and be actively practicing in architecture.
  • No fixed years-of-experience threshold is stated.

Application process

    Apply through the online fellowship portal, which opens in August for the following year’s competition.

    Prepare the application: a completed form, current résumé, a one-page project proposal, and a digital portfolio (PDF, up to 40 pages).

    Arrange three letters of reference.

    Pay the application fee (US $50 for a single early submission; higher for multiple categories or late submission).
  5. 5
    Submit before the November deadline; portal closes at 11:59 PM PST on the deadline date.
