The Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies runs a one-year post-baccalaureate fellowship for early-career engineers, based on the Rice University campus in Houston, Texas. Fellows join a small engineering team that develops, refines and evaluates low-cost, high-performance medical technologies for hospitals and clinics with very little equipment and very little money. Past projects include a warming crib for newborns, a diagnostic test for jaundice and a machine that assists newborn breathing. The institute is led by Dr. Maria Oden, an AAAS-Lemelson Invention Ambassador, and Dr. Rebecca Richards-Kortum, a 2016 MacArthur Fellow, and co-leads the NEST360 newborn-care alliance and CITEC, a centre for point-of-care cancer diagnostics. Rice360 team members work with partner sites in Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria, and fellows travel to them occasionally. This is a salaried, grant-funded staff appointment rather than a study programme: three to six engineering fellows work at a time alongside senior engineer leads.

Eligibility

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or the physical sciences from an accredited college or university; bioengineering or biomedical engineering is preferred
  • Graduating seniors as well as recent graduates may apply
  • At least one year of related experience in biomedical technology development or healthcare; the job posting states this can be gained during study or an internship
  • Recent graduates may carry up to three years of professional experience; applicants holding a master’s degree may carry up to one year
  • A demonstrated prior interest in global health technology development
  • Listed as preferences rather than requirements: a master’s degree in engineering, medical device or biotechnology industry experience, experience in low-resource settings and particularly sub-Saharan Africa, and CAD skills in SolidWorks or Fusion360
  • Open to all nationalities. Foreign national finalists are conditional on the university obtaining employment authorisation, which Rice pursues through its Office of International Students and Scholars
  • Full-time, 40 hours a week, in person on the Rice campus, Monday to Friday, with occasional early morning, evening or weekend hours to reach partners in other time zones. Fellows relocate to Houston
  • No age limit and no gender requirement is published
