The PROBio-LatAm Fellowships are jointly run by FEBS, IUBMB, and PABMB. They support research visits by eligible PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and new researchers from Latin America to a not-for-profit institution or university in a FEBS country.
Fellows undertake thesis research, experiments requiring specialist techniques, scientific collaboration, or advanced training. The 2026 application period ended on April 19, 2026, and awards were due to be announced by June 1, 2026.
Benefits & funding
- Research visits last 3–6 months.
- The maximum six-month award is EUR 7,000, including up to EUR 2,000 for travel and at least EUR 5,000 for living expenses.
- Awards are EUR 6,300 for five months, EUR 5,400 for four months, and EUR 4,500 for three months.
- Eligible travel costs include economy airfare, directly related incidental expenses, local airport bus fares, and visa costs.
- Funding does not cover health insurance, damage insurance, or host-laboratory research expenses, and payment is transferred after arrival in the host country.
Eligibility
- Applicants must reside in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Peru, or Uruguay and be affiliated with PABMB through the corresponding national society. Nationality itself is not stated as a restriction.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program, be postdoctoral fellows, or be new researchers within five years of receiving the PhD. Justified delays, including maternity leave at 18 months per child, prolonged illness, or other personal reasons, may be considered.
- The host must be an eligible not-for-profit institution or university in a FEBS country, and the home and host laboratories must be in different countries. The host supervisor must be affiliated with a FEBS Constituent Society.
- Applicants previously funded by IUBMB, including through a Travel Award or Wood-Whelan Fellowship, are not eligible. Current PROBio-LatAm awardees may request no more than one six-month extension.
- Applicants must provide proof of proficiency in English or the host laboratory’s official language.

Application process
- 1Identify an eligible host laboratory; the official host-lab list is optional, and applicants may approach an unlisted laboratory.
- 2Prepare in English a research proposal of no more than two single-spaced A4 pages, a EUR budget, a short CV and publications list, and an academic transcript where available for PhD students.
- 3Obtain the applicant’s PABMB membership certificate, language proof, a recommendation letter, the host laboratory’s agreement letter, the host supervisor’s recent publications and projects, and the supervisor’s FEBS membership certificate.
- 4Combine all requested documents in the required order into one PDF and email it to probio-latam@febs.org. The 2026 deadline was April 19 at 23:59 CET.
