The UoH-HYI Post-doctoral Fellowship in China Studies is jointly offered by the University of Hyderabad and the Harvard-Yenching Institute. It places Indian scholars whose doctoral research focuses on China at partner universities in India for research and teaching.

Fellows develop original scholarship and strengthen China studies teaching, including two courses per academic year. The program makes 2–4 awards annually for 24 months; the 2026 deadline has passed, and no 2027 opening date has been published.

Benefits & funding

  • A stipend of US$1,750 per month, paid in the equivalent amount in Indian rupees, for 24 months.
  • A research award of US$6,500 per year, paid in the equivalent amount in Indian rupees.
  • The research award may cover minor equipment, consumables, contingencies, and domestic or international travel for fieldwork, conferences, and workshops.
  • Fellows receive research guidance from an experienced mentor at a host or partner institution.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be Indian citizens and scholars of China.
  • Applicants must have received a PhD on or after January 1, 2020, and must provide proof of conferral.
  • Applicants must not hold a permanent or tenured position.
  • Mandarin proficiency for academic research is highly desirable but is not a hard eligibility requirement.
  • Employed applicants must provide a No-Objection Certificate at joining that permits full-time participation for all 24 months.

Application process

    Complete the official application form and upload every required document there in PDF format.

    Submit a CV, a Statement of Intent covering China studies and India-China comparative interests, a research statement of no more than five pages, a writing sample of no more than 30 pages, and two recommendation letters.

    If applicable, add Mandarin certification and evidence that the language was used in prior research.

    Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by the Fellowship Selection Committee through a language assessment followed by an academic assessment.
