Photography Expanded Fellowship supports photographers who want to test experimental forms of documentary practice and audience engagement. Magnum Foundation organizes the eight-month program around a changing theme, combining mentorship and peer learning with two in-person workshops.
The latest published theme was Heat and climate crisis. Its two cohorts used the same 2023 application pool, with workshops in Amman, Jordan, and Oaxaca, Mexico; the official opportunities page currently lists no new Photography Expanded call.
Benefits & funding
- Each selected fellow receives a $10,000 USD grant.
- Fellows join two in-person workshops, regular virtual mentor meetings, facilitated peer learning, and the wider Magnum Foundation network.
- For the 2023–24 cycle, Magnum Foundation covered all workshop-related travel expenses and support for reliable internet access during virtual meetings.
- The published call planned to select up to twelve fellows; the later 2024–25 cohort announcement named nine.
Eligibility
- The latest open call welcomed photographers from every region, with no nationality or residency restriction.
- No formal training, degree, or experience level was required; self-taught photographers and current students could apply.
- Applicants needed a project already under way that addressed the cycle theme and a plan to expand and complete it during the fellowship.
- Spoken English proficiency was required, and applications and convenings were in English.
- For collaborative projects, one person applied as the lead and described the partners; one team member could attend the workshops.
- Applicants had to commit to all program activities and contribute to the fellowship community.
