Photography Expanded is a Magnum Foundation fellowship for photographers who want to stretch documentary practice and test new ways of making, circulating and sharing images with audiences. Fellows get mentorship and peer learning around one theme.
Each theme runs on a two-year cycle, with workshops in rotating locations. The last theme, Heat (climate crisis), filled two cohorts from one 2023 call, meeting in Amman, Jordan and Oaxaca, Mexico; no new call is posted yet.
Benefits & funding
- A US$10,000 grant per fellow; up to twelve fellows per call.
- An eight-month fellowship with two in-person workshops and regular virtual mentor meetings.
- In the 2023 call, Magnum Foundation covered all workshop travel and ensured reliable internet for virtual meetings.
Eligibility
- Open to photographers from every region; no nationality or residence rule.
- No training, degree or experience level required; self-taught photographers and current students may apply.
- You need a project already under way on the cycle’s theme, with a plan to expand and complete it during the fellowship.
- Spoken English proficiency is required; applications and convenings are in English.
- Teams apply through one lead applicant; one team member attends the workshops.
- Applicants must commit to every part of the fellowship.
