Pew Latin American Fellows Program in the Biomedical Sciences

The Pew Latin American Fellows Program in the Biomedical Sciences is an annual fellowship and research program run by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Each year, Pew selects 10 researchers for postdoctoral biomedical training in laboratories at U.S. research institutions.

Fellows work with an established principal investigator and join Pew’s biomedical research network. Applicants must plan to further their research careers in Latin America after the fellowship.

Benefits & funding

Pew provides a $30,000 annual salary stipend for two years.
The U.S. sponsor laboratory must provide two years of medical benefits and enough supplemental compensation to meet U.S. National Institutes of Health postdoctoral salary guidelines.
Pew’s stipend lasts no more than 24 months; the fellowship may extend to 60 months only if the sponsor laboratory supplies salary and benefits after the first two years.
Fellows who return to Latin America with a confirmed position and laboratory space may receive an additional $70,000 for equipment and supplies.
Fellows can participate in annual meetings and connect with Pew-supported biomedical investigators.

Eligibility

The applicant must obtain a Ph.D. and/or M.D. by Feb. 1, 2027, but not before June 3, 2021. M.D. holders with an earlier completion date may ask the program office to review their eligibility.
The applicant must not have begun postdoctoral training in the U.S. or Europe before March 1, 2025.
Before applying, the applicant must secure a postdoctoral position with an established principal investigator in a U.S. laboratory. The sponsor cannot be the applicant’s Ph.D. adviser or mentor and must provide a support letter.
The application must include a statement of intent to further the applicant’s research career in Latin America after the fellowship.
Pew prefers applicants whose undergraduate and graduate degrees were earned in Latin America. Degrees from elsewhere may be considered, although training outside the U.S. is preferred.
The published eligibility rules state no nationality, residency, age, gender, or work-experience requirement.

Submit a CV, statements on a future research career in Latin America and the applicant’s most significant scientific contribution, a research proposal, and three reference letters.
