The Pegasus Scholarship Trust sends practising barristers from England and Wales to work inside another legal system for a few weeks. The Trust is pan-Inn, so members of any of the four Inns of Court can apply.
Placements are arranged with partner bars, courts, firms and NGOs across eleven destinations, from the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg to the Ontario Bar Association in Canada. Scholars observe and assist their hosts, then write up what they learned.
The purpose is to build working links between the Bar of England and Wales and other jurisdictions, so scholars commit to staying in practice at the English Bar for at least three years afterwards.
Benefits & funding
- Return flights to the placement country, plus a weekly stipend for the length of the placement.
- Most destinations pay £500 per week; Canada pays CAD 1,000 per week plus a CAD 2,000 accommodation contribution; India pays about £185 per week (INR 17,000); the New Zealand stipend is listed as to be confirmed.
- Dubai adds help with finding accommodation.
- Placements run 4 to 12 weeks depending on destination — 15 places across 11 destinations for 2027.
- Scholars obtain their own visas; the Trust issues letters confirming the award in support of visa applications.
Eligibility
- Practising at the Bar of England and Wales, either as a tenant in chambers or at the employed Bar.
- Within the first seven years of practice, excluding pupillage; breaks for illness, a career change or parental leave can be taken into account.
- Written permission from the head of chambers, senior clerk or employer to take the placement.
- A commitment to remain in practice at the English Bar for at least three years after the placement.
- Membership of any one of the four Inns of Court; the Trust publishes no nationality or residency rule.
- Australia, Bermuda, New York and Dubai are commercial-law placements, while the European Court of Human Rights placement is for human-rights practice; the India placement is arranged around the scholar’s interests, ideally in criminal, human-rights or other public-interest law.

- 2Apply through the online form from 28 September 2026 — personal details, education, work experience and placement choices — by 11.59pm on 29 November 2026.
- 3Arrange two referees who have known you for at least six months and are not family members; within seven days of applying, provide their names and contact details so they receive an automatic upload request, with references due by 6 December 2026.
- 4Attend a 20-minute online interview on the evening of 3 or 4 February 2027, usually scheduled between 5pm and 9pm.
- 5Expect the result within two weeks, then complete the acceptance module: signed undertaking, consent letter from chambers or employer, and bank details.
- 6Travel between April and December 2027, then file a post-placement survey and an article of no more than 900 words.
