The OBEL Teaching Fellowships fund people working outside academia to bring their practice into a university classroom. The programme is run by Henrik Frode Obels Fond, the Copenhagen-based foundation behind the OBEL Award, which recognises architecture that acts as an agent of social and ecological change. A fellow applies together with a host academic institution anywhere in the world, then teaches two courses, or one intensive course, inside an accredited university programme. Each course must engage the year’s OBEL Award theme; the 2026 call is built around Systems’ Hack, which asks how architecture can critically engage the systems underpinning contemporary society. Taught courses preferably begin in 2027. The 2026 round is the fourth edition; the 2025 fellows taught at UNAM in Mexico City and at ENAU in Carthage, Tunisia.

Benefits & funding

  • Up to €75,000 per fellowship.
  • The budget covers the fellow’s salary, travel, teaching materials, and other expenses needed to teach at the host institution.
  • Up to 15% of the budget may cover university overhead and institutional support such as office space.
  • Preparation time and teaching assistants can be budgeted, as long as the total stays within €75,000.
  • Salary levels are agreed case by case; the foundation sets no predetermined parameters.
  • The foundation signs an agreement with the university, which administers the funds and reports the payments.
  • Funds cannot pay for student trips, student stipends, or promotional publications.

Eligibility

  • Open to prospective fellows from any country; there is no nationality requirement.
  • Applications are joint, from the prospective fellow and a host academic institution running an accredited university programme.
  • At least five years of professional experience.
  • Current faculty, adjunct, and part-time teachers at the host university cannot apply. Part-time instructors elsewhere may apply if their main income comes from outside the university.
  • Teaching is face-to-face, and the fellow must remain in the city or region of the university for the duration of the course.
  • Each course needs at least 15 students. Independent studies do not qualify.
  • One theme per application, within the OBEL Award themes covering architecture, landscape architecture, design, and urban design.
  • Two people may co-teach a course.
  • The fellowship is a one-time opportunity per university and per fellow.

Application process

    Secure a host academic institution and agree on the courses, the schedule, and the budget.

    Prepare the joint proposal: the fellow’s expertise, the course plan and learning objectives, and a budget within €75,000.

    Submit through the SlideRoom portal before midnight CEST on 1 August 2026.

    Await the foundation’s decision; selected courses preferably begin in 2027 or soon thereafter.

    After teaching, the host institution submits the course syllabus and a report covering attendance, assessment, pedagogical methods, learning outcomes, and whether the course will continue.
