The Organization of American States (OAS) runs an internship program three times a year at its Washington, DC headquarters and in its offices in member states.
Interns work full-time, in person or remotely; at headquarters they join one of about 30 areas, from human rights and democracy to finance and administration.
Benefits & funding
- Unpaid: no salary, stipend or other support; interns cover travel, housing and living costs.
- Health insurance at the intern’s own cost; in-person interns in DC need at least US$500,000 of cover, including evacuation and repatriation.
- Full-time, 40 hours a week (9:00–17:30 Washington time), remote interns included.
- A certificate of completion for attending at least 80% of the weekly orientation sessions (English/Spanish).
Eligibility
- Any nationality; your country need not be an OAS member.
- Undergraduates who have finished their second year, any graduate student, or entry-level professionals. No age limit.
- Cumulative grades equal to 75% or higher.
- Proficiency in two of English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
- Former OAS interns cannot apply again.
- In person in DC: US citizens or permanent residents, DC-area F-1/J-1 or G-4 dependent visa holders with a work permit, or foreign nationals the OAS approves for G-4 sponsorship; others work remotely. In person at a country office: its nationals, or residents with a work permit there.
