The Nieman Fellowship, run by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, brings about two dozen accomplished journalists to Harvard each year. Founded in 1938, it has hosted more than 1,700 fellows from around the world. Fellows spend a full academic year in Cambridge, Massachusetts, auditing Harvard classes, joining Nieman seminars, and pursuing a self-designed course of study. The program is open to journalists of any nationality who have at least five years of full-time experience. Each cycle, US and international journalists apply on separate tracks.

Benefits & funding

  • Stipend of US$87,500 paid over the nine-month fellowship to cover living costs.
  • The cost of auditing Harvard classes is covered for fellows and their affiliates (spouses or partners).
  • Health insurance supplement of up to US$6,250 each for the fellow and spouse, and up to US$3,750 for each child under 18.
  • Childcare allowance for children age 12 or younger: US$10,500 for one child, rising to US$16,750 for four or more, with an added US$10,500 for a child age 3 or younger.
  • Access to Harvard libraries, Nieman seminars, and the foundation’s programs and network.

Eligibility

  • Open to working journalists of any nationality.
  • At least five years of full-time media experience; journalism done as a university student does not count.
  • Freelancers are eligible on the same five-year basis.
  • All candidates must speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • No age limit, no academic prerequisite, and no college degree required.
  • Fellows must live in the Cambridge area while classes are in session and take part in all Nieman programs.

Application process

    Wait for applications to open in the first week of October.

    Choose the correct track — international (non-US citizens) or US (US citizens); dual citizens email the Nieman office for guidance on the right category.

    Prepare two essays (a personal statement up to 1,000 words and a study proposal up to 500 words), a short professional profile, and work samples for your medium.

    Arrange three confidential letters of recommendation.

    Submit by the deadline: 1 December for international applicants (recommendations by 15 December), or 31 January for US applicants (recommendations by 14 February).
