National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic (NSP)

Benefits & funding

• Bachelor’s and master’s students: €620 per month, for a study stay of one or two semesters.
• PhD students: €1,025.50 per month, for a stay of 1 to 10 months.
• University teachers, researchers and artists: €1,025.50 per month without a PhD and with under 4 years of work experience; €1,370 per month with a PhD and under 10 years of experience; €1,470 per month with a PhD and over 10 years of experience.
• Students and PhD students may also receive a travel allowance based on the distance between their place of residence and Slovakia: up to 200 km €0; 200–300 km €50; 300–500 km €100; 500–1,000 km €250; 1,000–2,000 km €350; 2,000–3,000 km €500; 3,000–5,000 km €750; 5,000–7,000 km €1,100; over 7,000 km €1,500.
• The scholarship is set to cover average living costs during the stay. For the teacher, researcher and artist track the monthly amount covers living costs and does not include travel.

Eligibility

• Open to applicants from any country — the programme lists all EU member states plus other European countries, Asia, Africa, America, Australia and Oceania.
• Students must be enrolled as regular bachelor’s or master’s students at their home university at the time of application.
• PhD applicants must be enrolled as regular PhD students at their home institution.
• University teachers, researchers and artists apply on the basis of their post at a home institution; the monthly rate depends on whether they hold a PhD and on years of experience.
• Applicants must not have spent 15 months or more in Slovakia in the 36 months before the deadline.
• Applicants must not draw another scholarship from Slovak public funds for the same stay.
• An admission or invitation letter from the Slovak host university or research organisation is required; for the teacher, researcher and artist track it must have been issued within 3 months of the deadline.
• The programme does not support anyone accepted for, or already enrolled in, full-degree study in Slovakia at bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral level.
• A student who has held an NSP scholarship must wait two years before receiving another, apart from force majeure exceptions.
• Applications and supporting documents must be in Slovak or English; documents in other languages need official translations.

Application process

   Identify a host university or research organisation in Slovakia and obtain its admission or invitation letter.

   Register and complete the online application at the programme’s portal; the system opens at least six weeks before each deadline.

   Upload the required documents — curriculum vitae, motivation letter, a detailed study or research programme with a timeline, diploma scans, a list of publications or artistic activities, and the host institution’s letter. PhD applicants also submit a supervisor’s recommendation and confirmation of PhD enrolment.

   Submit before 16:00 CET on the deadline day.

   A selection committee assesses the applications and awards the scholarships.

Program timeline

1. Deadline for stays in the summer semester of the current academic year

   31 October 2026, 16:00 CET

2. Annual deadline for stays in the following academic year

   30 April, 16:00 CET

3. Online application system opens at least six weeks before each deadline

4. Stays run for 1 to 10 months, or one to two semesters for students
