Mudhouse Residency is an artist-founded summer program in Agios Ioannis on the Greek island of Crete. It brings international contemporary visual artists, writers, musicians and performers to the village for two weeks of focused practice, cultural exchange and community activities.
The 2026 season comprised three sessions of 20 artists each. Applications for 2026 are closed, and the official application page asks prospective applicants to check back in fall 2026 for summer 2027.
Benefits & funding
- Every route includes a private bedroom, shared studio or discipline-appropriate workspace, and two meals each day for two weeks.
- Residents receive professional introductions, case-by-case project support, community activities, public-program opportunities and transport between the Ierapetra bus station and Agios Ioannis when they do not rent a vehicle.
- The 2026 general application offered USD 4,400, USD 3,600 and USD 2,800 fee tiers. The lowest tier required a residency job; approximately one third of places were partially funded and another third were partially funded with an additional stipend.
- Two 2026 Full Fellowship Awards covered accommodation, studio space and two daily meals at no charge to the artist.
- Artists remained responsible for travel, extra groceries, art supplies and excursions outside the village. The application fee was USD 10.
Eligibility
- International contemporary visual artists, writers, musicians and performers could apply.
- The official pages state no nationality, residency, degree, age, gender or professional-experience requirement.
- Members of a group or collaborative pair had to submit separate applications and identify their collaborators in the proposal.
- Applicants could apply to both the Full Fellowship Award and the General Application, but the two applications were considered separately.
