The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship was established in 2010 by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is administered by the Center for Chinese Studies at the National Central Library. It funds foreign professors, associate and assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and doctoral students to conduct research in Taiwan for 3 to 12 months. Research must fall within the social sciences and humanities, on a topic related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia-Pacific region, or Sinology. Fellows affiliate with a Taiwan university or research institution of their choice. By 2026 the program had hosted more than 1,500 scholars from 93 countries.

Benefits & funding

  • Monthly grant of NT$60,000 for professors, associate professors, and research fellows of equivalent rank.
  • Monthly grant of NT$50,000 for assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral students, and other recommended candidates.
  • One round-trip, economy-class air ticket for the most direct route to Taiwan.
  • Accident insurance coverage of NT$1 million, plus medical insurance for accidental injuries.
  • Research period of 3 to 12 months.

Eligibility

  • Foreign nationals who are professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students at overseas universities, or research fellows at equivalent levels in academic institutions abroad.
  • Research topic must be in the social sciences or humanities and related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia-Pacific region, or Sinology.
  • Applicants currently conducting research, teaching, or studying in Taiwan are not eligible.
  • Fellows may not hold scholarships from other Taiwan-based governmental agencies or academic institutions during the fellowship, and may not take part-time work without consent.

Application process

    Prepare a resume including a publication list, a research proposal, and two letters of recommendation (or one recommendation letter plus one letter of agreement from the highest administrative director of your institution).

    Submit the application online through the Taiwan Fellowship portal during the application window.
  3. 3
    Print the completed form and mail it to the nearest R.O.C. (Taiwan) Embassy or Representative Office.
  4. 4
    The selection committee reviews applications with input from the embassies; successful candidates then obtain a consent letter from a Taiwan university or research institution and send it to the Taiwan Fellowship team by December 31.
  5. 5
    Receive the Grant Authorization Letter, apply for an FR visa, and travel to Taiwan to begin research.
