The Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (MPIIB) hosts international Bachelor’s and Master’s students in Berlin for three months, each working on one listed research project under an experienced scientist. The 2026 projects covered the human gut microbiome, host–microbe interactions in Drosophila and malaria parasite biology.
A complementary program prepares interns for PhD applications through courses on presentations and research questions, plus excursions. The 2026 call is closed; the next round has not yet been announced.

- Stipend: €1,400 for living costs in Berlin (program page); the FAQ states about €1,300 per month.
- Accommodation near the institute, and travel to and from Berlin covered.
- Supervision, PhD-application skills courses, excursions and administrative support.
- Visa fees are not covered; the International Office helps accepted interns with the visa.
Eligibility
- Enrolled at a university in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program for the whole internship; graduates no longer enrolled cannot apply.
- Without a Bachelor’s degree yet: at least four semesters completed by the application date.
- Strong academic record, good English and a background relevant to an offered project (e.g. biology, medicine, biochemistry, epidemiology).
- Available in Berlin for the full period, 1 August–31 October 2026; voluntary internships only, not for course credit.
- Aimed at students whose access to top higher education is constrained; others may apply, but those showing significant limitations get preference.
- No nationality or residence restriction; students living in low- and middle-income countries are strongly encouraged.
