MASS is a 120-ECTS Erasmus Mundus Joint Master delivered by universities in Rome, Belgrade, Bremen and Nice. Students spend the two-year, full-time programme at between two and four consortium universities and study astrophysics, space science, computational methods and related research topics.

The latest confirmed intake began in September 2025. The consortium states that no edition starts in 2026 and that any edition from 2027 onward depends on a new EU grant, with updated rules to be announced.

Benefits & funding

  • For the 2025 edition, an EMJM scholarship covered participation costs, tuition fees and comprehensive insurance, plus €1,400 per month for up to 24 months for travel and living costs.
  • The latest published scheme averaged 15 EMJM scholarships per edition; one equivalent Italian Space Agency scholarship was also available for the 2025–26 edition.
  • Reserve-list candidates could join as self-funded students up to a total cohort of 30; published participation fees were €6,250 per semester, with some fee waivers available.
  • Funding and fee rules for any future edition have not yet been confirmed.

Eligibility

  • Applicants to the latest cycle could be of any nationality; no residence or age requirement was stated.
  • Applicants needed a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent three-year qualification worth at least 180 ECTS, in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, mathematics, computing science, space engineering or a closely related field.
  • Applicants still completing the degree had to graduate by the end of June in the start year if they needed an Italian study visa, or by the end of July if they did not.
  • Applicants needed the specified mathematics, physics, laboratory, data-analysis and programming background, plus qualifying English evidence unless exempt through native-speaker status or prior university study entirely in English.
  • Anyone who had already received an EMJM scholarship under the 2021–2027 Erasmus+ programme could apply only through the self-funded route; earlier EMMC or EMJMD awards did not trigger this restriction.
  • Future editions may use different eligibility and language rules.
