The Lee Kong Chian Research Fellowship is a six-month residential fellowship run by Singapore’s National Library Board. Fellows work in residence at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, researching its collections and those of the National Archives of Singapore — historical materials on Singapore and Southeast Asia dating from the 16th century.
It is open to local and international curators, historians, academics and independent researchers. For 2026 the Library gave preference to topics spanning early Singapore and Malayan history, arts and culture, World War II materials, and Chinese-community and cultural-heritage collections.
Benefits & funding
- Monthly stipend of S$3,500 for six months, toward living expenses, local transport and photocopying.
- Overseas Fellows also receive a one-time relocation package of S$1,500, a return economy airfare up to S$1,500 (reimbursement), and a monthly accommodation allowance up to S$3,500 (reimbursement).
- A dedicated research space at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library with a computer and internet access.
- Access to the library and archive collections, plus an introduction to library staff who recommend relevant resources.
Eligibility
- Open to both local and foreign applicants; no nationality restriction.
- For curators, historians, academics or independent researchers with an established record of achievement in their field.
- Scholars pursuing doctoral, postdoctoral or advanced research are encouraged to apply.
- Applicants should hold scholarly and research credentials (or the equivalent) and propose a topic that draws on the library’s collections.

Application process
- 1Complete the official application form, including a research proposal on an eligible topic.
- 2Email the completed form and required documents to LKCRF@nlb.gov.sg, or post them to the National Library Headquarters, by the deadline.
- 3Applications are assessed on originality, use of the collections, feasibility within six months, and the applicant’s competency and understanding of the topic.
- 4Acceptance or rejection is notified within three months of the closing date.
