JENESYS Phase III was a hybrid exchange promoted by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Center. It brought together 24 participants from ASEAN countries and six from Japan for online preparation followed by activities in Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Bangkok.
Participants selected either climate and environmental issues or digital infrastructure development. Through lectures, field visits, discussions, and workshops, each subgroup developed and presented a social-business plan addressing a shared Japan-ASEAN challenge.
Benefits & funding
- Accommodation during the official program period was fully covered.
- The program covered the one-way flight and travel from Fukuoka to Bangkok, transportation during official activities, scheduled admission fees, and travel insurance for the official period.
- Meals during the program were covered, except for some meals in Japan identified by the organizer.
- Participants paid their own travel to the designated meeting point in Tokyo and from Bangkok back home, plus passport, applicable Thailand visa, personal, and any extra-day costs. No cash allowance was provided.
Eligibility
- Applicants had to be citizens or permanent residents of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Viet Nam.
- Eligible profiles were university students, graduate students, and young professionals aged 30 or younger during the program. No specific degree credential was required.
- Applicants had to be studying, interested in, or working on economic or social issues, policymaking, startups, Japan-ASEAN business and trade, or economic development.
- Applicants needed sufficient spoken English, internet access for the online sessions, a computer for the travel program, physical capacity for extensive walking, and a passport valid for at least six months after returning home.
- Long-term former students in Japan, such as MEXT scholarship recipients, were not eligible. JENESYS alumni could apply.

Application process
