The Graduate Research Fellowship is run by Jane Street, a quantitative trading firm. It funds doctoral students in electrical engineering and computer science, mathematics, physics or statistics for one academic year.
Fellows stay at their own university and continue their own research, which need not relate to trading. They are invited, not required, to visit a Jane Street office and give a talk on a topic of their choice.
Benefits & funding
- Full tuition and fees for the award year.
- A US$50,000 stipend (or the local-currency equivalent) for living costs; it is taxable and may be subject to withholding.
- An optional, all-expenses-paid office visit to give a talk.
- Finalists receive US$5,000.
- Existing fellowships do not exclude you; your overall stipend would most likely rise, but not by the full US$50,000, depending on university funding caps.
Eligibility
- PhD students with at least one year left in a programme in EECS, mathematics, physics or statistics, or applicants committed to start a PhD at a specified university in Fall 2027.
- Adjacent fields with significant overlap with one of the four also qualify.
- The university must be an accredited, degree-granting research institution in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand or Singapore; full-time good standing must be kept all year or the award is forfeited.
- Any nationality may apply.
- Current employees, their immediate family and former employees can receive only honorable mentions.
- Past Finalists and Honorable Mentions may reapply.

Application process
- 1If you study outside the US, first confirm that a faculty member at your university will help arrange payment of the award.
- 2Submit the online form by 13 November 2026 (AoE) with one PDF combining your CV and a short research statement.
- 3Name one or two letter writers; Jane Street contacts them, and letters are due 1 December 2026 (AoE).
- 4Faculty may also nominate a student by email.
- 5Awards are announced in February.
