Chatham House runs this 12-month fellowship with the International Strategy Forum and the Special Competitive Studies Project. Fellows are based in London with hybrid work and undertake a personal project for the Digital Society Programme.
The programme combines independent research, leadership development and contributions to Chatham House research. Official materials document 2022–23 and 2025–26 cycles, but no fixed annual schedule is published. Applications are currently closed.
Benefits & funding
- A monthly stipend of £2,365 is intended to cover London living costs, including accommodation, utilities, food and transport.
- The Academy covers reasonable relocation costs, including travel to and from the UK, three nights of accommodation, visa costs and extra baggage.
- The UK Immigration Healthcare Surcharge and reasonable research, outreach and dissemination costs are covered; dental care, optical care and prescription medicines may remain payable.
- Fellows receive leadership workshops, personal development coaching, media training and access to the Academy network, followed by five-year Chatham House membership after successful completion.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be alumni of the International Strategy Forum Fellowship and want to work with the Digital Society Programme.
- All nationalities are eligible, and Chatham House states that it imposes no age restriction.
- Applicants must have completed a BA degree or equivalent and have research experience.
- Applicants need knowledge of and interest in technology governance, digital public goods, AI and democracy; early-to-mid-career candidates from academia, NGOs, business, government, civil society or media are described as ideal.
- The fellowship is full-time and cannot be combined with other work or study. Applicants must demonstrate spoken English proficiency, relevant research experience and leadership experience or potential.
