The British Academy funds new international interdisciplinary research on the 2027 theme of Mobilities. A UK-based humanities or social sciences Principal Investigator leads at least one overseas Co-Applicant, with collaboration spanning disciplines while remaining grounded in the humanities or social sciences.

Projects may examine the movement of people, materials, things, ideas, narratives or innovation. The grant is administered through an eligible UK host institution, research may take place in the UK or internationally, and each project starts in March or April 2027 and runs for 24 months.

Benefits & funding

  • Up to £300,000 is available for 24 months at 80% full economic cost; the total project value at 100% full economic cost cannot exceed £375,000.
  • Eligible costs include PI and Co-Applicant time, postdoctoral research assistance, training, travel, fieldwork, networking and institutional support.
  • The Academy expects to support approximately 8–10 awards in this round.

Eligibility

  • The PI must work in the humanities or social sciences, have postdoctoral status or equivalent research experience, and hold an established role at an eligible UK university or research institute for the full award.
  • The PI must be contracted for at least 50% of their time at the UK host and devote 20%–100% of their time to the grant.
  • Applicants may be of any nationality; no separate residence requirement or fixed program city is stated.
  • The team must include at least one internationally based Co-Applicant of postdoctoral status or equivalent experience and demonstrate genuine collaboration across disciplines.
  • One person may lead only one bid in this call, and duplicate proposals submitted to an earlier round are ineligible.

Application process

    Confirm that the PI, team and UK host meet the scheme rules; an unregistered organisation must request an account by 23 September 2026 at 17:00 GMT.

    The PI starts the English-language application in Flexi-Grant and invites registered contributors and Co-Applicants.

    Complete the eligibility declaration, research proposal, financial details, applicant details, Co-Applicant details and equality, diversity and inclusion section.

    Submit early enough for the UK host to review and approve the application by 7 October 2026 at 17:00 BST; the Academy recommends allowing at least five working days.
