The International Graduate Program (A) is the Institute of Science Tokyo’s theme-focused, English-taught graduate intake for fall 2027. Applicants choose one of five curricular programs linked to 14 science and engineering departments in Tokyo.
Most programs run as an Integrated Doctoral Education Program (master’s plus doctorate in three to five years); the environmental-design program also offers a two-year master’s. No Japanese is required, and Japanese classes are offered.
Benefits & funding
- Self-funded by default: enrollment fee JPY 282,000 and tuition JPY 635,400 a year (subject to change); deferral or waiver can be requested.
- MEXT Scholarship (Integrated Doctoral only, on Science Tokyo’s nomination): JPY 147,000 a month at master’s stage, JPY 148,000 at doctoral stage, fees waived, airfare under conditions.
- JASSO: JPY 48,000 a month, October 2027–March 2028, for overseas applicants; fees still payable.
Eligibility
- 16 years of schooling outside Japan, a Japanese university degree, or a foreign bachelor’s-equivalent of 3+ years, by the day before enrollment; 15-year routes need individual assessment (the research-experience route also needs age 22+).
- Any nationality; Japanese citizens need a long-term visa where they live and must consult the Admissions Division first. Residents of Japan may apply.
- One Science Tokyo program per intake; parallel applications are rejected.
- MEXT: not open to Japanese citizens; GPA 2.30/3.00 or above, age 34 or under on 1 April of the first scholarship year, English at CEFR B2 or an English-medium degree; most past MEXT recipients barred.

Application process
- 1Pick a supervisor from your program’s faculty list and obtain their written consent.
- 2Send the consent letter to the Admissions Division by 15 November 2026 to receive the portal link.
- 3Pay the JPY 30,000 fee (plus a system fee; current MEXT scholars exempt) and submit online by 22 November 2026, 23:59 JST, with one evaluation sheet with recommendation.
- 4For MEXT or JASSO, file the separate scholarship form in the same window; MEXT also needs a dean’s recommendation letter.
