Intermediate Research Fellowships – Basic is a five-year award for researchers building an independent basic biomedical research programme. DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance administers the fellowship, which is held at a not-for-profit host institution in India.
Projects may span basic science and veterinary research relevant to human or animal health, including interdisciplinary work. The 2026 round opened on 20 February and closed on 23 March; no later opening date has been published.

Eligibility
- Applicants must hold a PhD in a science discipline and propose work within the basic biomedical research remit.
- Applicants must have 4–15 years of post-PhD research experience.
- There is no age or nationality restriction, and applicants need not live in India when applying, but the fellowship work must be based in India.
- A not-for-profit host institution in India must administer the award for its full duration; a salaried position there is not required.
